Somnathpur Temple, Mysore
You can also have one day excursion around Mysore. Some of the places which are located nearby Mysore are Srirangapatna, Tipu's Summer Palace, Gumbaz, Ranganathittoo Bird Sanctuary, Somnathpur, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Nagarhole National Park.
Somnathpur

Somnnathpur temple is the star shaped temple and splendid example of Hoysala architecture. It is embellished with a profusion of finely sculptured friezes and panels. The temple is well preserved.
Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve  

Bandipur National Park and Tiger Reserve is located about 80 kms from Mysore. Bandipur National Park is one of the most beautiful wildlife reserve with rare species of wild animals and birds. The Project Tiger was launched by WWF in 1973 in the Bandipur National Park in order to save the tiger. This tiger reserve has open forests and organize safaris and provide various facilities to view the wildlife from the back of an elephant. 
Nagarhole National Park 
Nagarhole National Park is the home of various wildlife animals like tiger, leopard, gaur, elephant, sambar, chital or the spotted deer, wild boar, pangolin, langur and macaques. Besides various animals there are about 2500 species of birds, including the magnificent Malabar Pied Hornbill and the Great Black Woodpecker. There are excellent facilities for visitors to stay at the Kabini River Lodge and for viewing wildlife. Nagarhole National Park and the Kabini River Lodge are a nature-lover’s delight

Srirangapatna 

Srirangapatna is located about 16 kms. from Mysore. This island fortress was once the capital of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan. Srirangapatna is named after ‘Sri-Ranga’, the presiding deity of this town.This fortress is picturesquely located on the Cauvery river. Within the fort walls stands a mosque and the Ranganathaswamy Temple. Tipu Sultan with his soldiers attacked the British from here. An obelisk marks the place where Tipu fell, betrayed by his own men. The ‘Daria Daulat’, Tipu’s summer palace and the majestic ‘Gumbaz’ - his mausoleum, are located on the banks of the Cauvery river. 
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, Mysore
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a blend of Hoysala and Vijayanagara styles of architecture. Images of Vishnu can be seen on pillars, ceilings and domes. The image of God is represented by the seven-headed serpent, after whom the island and its oldest structure are named.
Gumbaz
Gumbaz is the tomb of Tipu Sultan has splendid ebony doors inlaid with ivory, black pillars which create a dramatic contrast with the cream walls of the building, a magnificent dome and delicate minarets. The traditional gardens lead to the mausoleum.
Tipu's Summer Palace
Tipu Summer Palace Bagh or the Garden of the Wealth of the Seas is situated on the banks of River Cauvery. This palace was the Tipu’s favourite summer retreat. This palace was built in 1784 in the Indo-Saracenic style. The palace is made of teak and has ornate and beautiful frescoes. An elegant room serves as a museum where Tipu’s gold embroidered tunic, his coin collection and some western paintings and engravings are on display.

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary
 

Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is located about 18 kms. from Mysore. This bird sanctuary is located on the lush island on the Cauvery River. This bird sanctuary is a home to various exotic varieties of water birds and crocodiles. Some of the birds migrate during the winter from Siberia and North America. It is possible to see them at a very close range through boats. The best period to visit this sanctuary is between June and February.
