Almora

Almora is perched on a hillock at an elevation of 1646 m. It is one of the rare places in the hills, where short distances take hours to cover due to the twisty and winding hill roads. The Almora city appears like a large horse shoe or Sitoli forming the front part and the bazaar forms the other part. The town, which is an amalgamation of social and cultural influences is well known for the famous freedom fighters, writers, journalists, editors, administrators, soldiers and artists. In the 16th century the Chand rulers shifted their capital from Champawat to Almora. The main tourist spots in Almora are the Vivekanand Hill Agricultural Research Laboratory, Tagore House, Almora jail, Simtola, Deer Park and various shopping centers, including the 200 year old Lala Bazaar. The various other interesting places near Almora are Nanda Devi Temple, Kalimath, Katarmal, Chital and Lakhudiar. The most interesting local product is the Angora cloth made from the fur of Angora rabbits and the tamta (copper) vessels.
